so nice outside today

TY SEGALL BAND / WHITE FENCE TONIGHT!

Pumped to go to what feels like the first show in ages. The Ty Segall band includes Mikal Cronin (!), Charlie Moonhart (of the Moonhearts), and Emily Rose Epstein. Playing with The Hussy, White Fence, and a band called Trin Tran. I recently read that there are 3 versions of the White Fence lineup (LA/SF/NY), which all apparently sound a little different, and so I’m wondering which one will play tonight.

Field Mts – You Were Always

When my old computer broke, I lost a lot of old field mts stuff, so I’m starting to make some more tunes, and will hopefully release some version of Have Fun sometime.

Lunch Breaks / Throwing Out Mixtapes

Where I work, I sit at a desk within a small cluster of half-open cubicles. There is lots of sunlight, tall ceilings, and plenty of quiet, open space. It’s nice to feel like I’m not trapped in a box, but the setup means that I don’t really get to listen to music while I’m working. Also, the other engineers are quite a bit older than me, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing a bunch of tunes out in the open anyway. So, I always look forward to lunch, especially on days when I’ve recently burned a new mix, because I can head out to the car and listen to music for a while.

There are about a dozen mix CDs in my car this afternoon, strewn about the passenger seat and center console, along with twice as many albums I’ve picked up at Frugal Muse over the last several months. Every so often, I try to choose which ones to throw out in order to make room for new stuff, and which ones to keep around for a while longer.

It’s always kind of funny looking at the old mixes, because it makes me think about how I wanted to make something that I would never get tired of listening to, that I could just keep in my car forever and never want to throw away or replace.

Obviously, that never happens. Regardless, I still always feel a little bit disappointed by whatever the actual life-span of any single mix was, let-down by the fact that I grew tired of all of these “favorite songs” too quickly.

That’s what’s so great about music, though, and specifically mixtapes: While some eternally-awesome live recording of “Frontwards” might actually lose its luster after a hundred listens, the feeling of discovering new music, of making and listening to a new mix, will always be great.

Stereolab French Disco (Live) / Treefort Shows

This is really great. In other news, two Treefort shows are lined up for late May and early June! I’ll post more about those shows soon.

Athens, GA: Inside/Out

I walked down to the record exchange today to pick up a copy of that Alex Chilton reissue that came out a few months ago. I also found a couple sweet bargain recs, including this soundtrack to the documentary “Athens, GA: Inside/Out,” a film which somehow I didn’t even know existed. It’s full of some really killer live tracks, including an amazing song called Pretty by Love Tractor. If you haven’t heard their tune “I Broke My Saw,” check that out sometime, too. It’s so great. I wish I could have been around to see songs like these in person. They seem so far out of reach, you know? Nobody’s making music for Wednesday afternoons anymore. Anyway, there is also a cool REM cover of (All I’ve Got to Do) Is Dream on this comp.

Slow Loris – This Will Be Our Year (Zombies Cover)

I spent a couple hours driving out into the country today to take some pictures, and I listened to Oddesey and Oracle a few times. I decided to make a cover of this song when I got home. It sounds a little weird because I sped it up a bit. This picture is from Delaware or Maryland.
